Voor diegenen die echte wetenschappelijke discussies willen lezen of voeren: Engelstalige wetenschappelijke literatuur is er in overvloed. Eén aflevering van een tijdschrift vormt een mooi startpunt. Het redelijk gezaghebbende internationale tijdschrift "Journal of Homosexuality" wijdde in 1990 een speciaal themanummer aan relaties tussen mannen en jongens, oftewel boylovers en "loved boys". Een groot aantal verschillende auteurs schrijft ruim 330 bladzijden vol over "man-boy relationships". Het themanummer stond onder eindredactie van 3 Nederlanders: de al eerder genoemde Edward Brongersma en Theo Sandfort, en daarnaast Alex van Naerssen, beiden verbonden aan de Universiteit Utrecht. Sandfort was verbonden aan de vakgroep Homostudies en Van Naerssen (nog steeds) aan de vakgroep klinische psychologie.

In het themanummer komen zeer uiteenlopende onderwerpen aan bod, wat wel blijkt uit de inhoudsopgave. Voor wie geïnteresseerd is in wat wetenschappers over dit onderwerp te melden hebben, is dit een mooi startpunt. Het nummer staat vol met literatuurverwijzingen.
